ARESPACK is a multi-window terminal program designed to facilitate emergency communications via packet radio. ARESPACK has been developed over a period of several years by members of the Utah County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (UC-ARES). It incorporates many features that we have found valuable for use during actual emergencies where packet radio was used extensively.

The primary design criteria were:

  • To facilitate sending and receiving of packet radio messages using a message form format.
  • To provide a simplified operator interface for packet radio message handling.
  • To provide a method whereby messages could be received while another message was being composed.
  • To provide a mechanism for message tracking and storage.
  • To provide a method for automatically receiving and printing messages with little or no operator intervention.

A built-in editor allows the operator to type a message into the program and send it while simultaneously receiving and printing messages from the other station. You do not have to leave the terminal program in order to compose or send a message. You are always "on-line" even while entering a message to be sent. Packet messages can be received and printed automatically, without assistance from the local operator. This facilitates semi-unattended reception of messages. Garbled messages can be re-sent with a minimum of effort, and even retrieved and resent by the remote station.
