Well
as you read this months bulletin you are no doubt several pounds heavier
than the last meeting. Did Santa bring you some new ham gear ? One amateur
I talked to over the weekend received a FT1000 for those of you not into
hf, its a VERY expensive radio, must be true love.
The
club is trying something new this year to attract new members to join the
club and become new amateur radio operators. We are hosting an open house
and information night for the general public, this will replace our
February meeting. The plan is to have a display for most modes of
operation such as packet, APRS, 2 metres, 6 metres, HF SSB and CW. During
the January meeting we will formalize the open house and ask for your help
in making this a success.
One way you can all help is to talk about the evening to anyone who is
remotely interested in short-wave listening, CB Radio, or Ham Radio. There
is a saying that to catch more fish you need your hook in the water , more
hook time equals more fish. We need new fish er hams , to help the hobby
grow. If each member brought one prospect out to the open house I would
consider it a success. The club is starting a public relations blitz and
some advertising to promote the evening but your help is the front-line
effort.
The
importance of amateur radio should be clear to everyone, our club was
contacted by the ambulance,
police and hospital to be ready to assist if there was a y2k problem. I am
proud of the efforts made by Robert and Ed and their volunteers for
assisting those that needed it. We all owe them a big thank-you.
