Last Meeting (May)
Remote Control Planes Past and Present
by Program Director, Ben VA3BNY

Two club members, Tedd Doda VE3TJD and Hugh Baird VE3IYG have over 75 years combined flying experience of remote control model airplanes.

At our May 1 meeting, KWARC members had an opportunity to see radio control technology from the early experimental days to modern digital and multi channel control units. Hugh started the presentation with displays and explanations on how radio control units first were coupled to airplane control surfaces. He also brought his personal collection of home made remote controls. Hugh explained how he became involved with testing commercially manufactured units to perfect the control of remote model airplanes.

Tedd Doda  VE3TJD also is a long time pilot, starting at the age of 8 years; his first flight was in a snowstorm after receiving his plane as a Christmas gift.  Tedd experimented by installing a video camera in one of his planes and showed video footage of that flight and subsequent crash.

Our thanks to both Hugh and Tedd for showing the members a glimpse into the past, as well as the newest radio controlling features available to day. Great Job
