Minutes of the Kitchener Waterloo Amateur Radio
Club monthly meeting, January 8th, 2000.

President Bob VA3MCK called the meeting to order at 7:37,
approximately 45 members and guests were in attendance.
Bob announced that two persons present at the meeting were offering to
form a committee to assist Radio Amateurs in placing antennas in
apartments. Boris Berezov VE3RCZ and Alfred Baer may be contacted if you
need help with HF antennae problems at your apartment. Alfred may be
reached at 885 3669.
Ron VE3DBD made an announcement regarding the upcoming Radio Amateur
Course, we have 10 persons registered and the course will start as
scheduled.
The Clubs chief examiner Vern Stroud VE3RVS made an announcement that long
time serving examiner, Eric VE3BB is retiring from the position. Thanks
were given to Eric for his outstanding service and a hardy round of
applause was given. Vern asked if someone would volunteer to replace Eric
as an examiner. The request was met with our normal enthusiast response.

Ben VA3BNYintroduced the guest speaker for the evening. Bob Rushby VE3GLA,
Bob gave a very interesting talk on the new digital modes using computer
sound cards. There will be a link on KWARC's website for more information
on these new modes and what's required to get on the air.
Bob gave website information on how to get started with programs such as
" Digipan, Zakanaka," and where to find out about the hardware
" WM2D build your own" or " Rigblaster ".

President Bob called for a coffee break.
Paul VE3SY updated the members on the new proposed rule changes for
licence standards, including the 5 wpm requirement for HF band privileges.
John VE3SJV won $ 25.50 in the 50/50 draw, which he will probably give to
Ted to fix his radio !
Ben, Tech Chairman reported the old CKCO-TV tower is now completely down,
VE3KSR-1 has had problems but is now back on the air. APRS radio developed
harmonics that was interfering with aircraft band and was replaced with a
radio supplied by Paul ( VE3SY). Thanks again to Paul.
The 6 meter repeater is now back on the air at the Baden site with the
proper antennae.
Ben, Program Chairman reported that the next meeting will be a Show N Tell
and swap meet, in March Ralph Cameron VE3BBM from Ottawa will be speaking
to the club on the "Jack Ravenscroft interference case " as
featured in a recent TCA article.
Dave VA3DGS, Club Treasurer, reported that we are in good financial shape
and should survive till next year.
Larry VE3LGN, Packet Chairman reported the next packet meeting will be
held on Tuesday, 16th Jan at Mary and Drew Riddell's home--- park in the
driveway.
Hugh VE3IYG thanked Paul for the excellent Christmas page on the club's
website.
Gord VE3NQK offered congrats to Don VE3ESE and Greg VE3NXB for their
efforts in the DX SSB contest. Don and Greg operated T48RAC from Cuba and
placed 1st in Cuba and 3rd in the world. Way to GO !!
Harold VE3DWH reported that the QCWA is sponsoring a Cruise next October,
anyone interested should contact Harold for more information.
