Minutes of the Kitchener Waterloo Amateur Radio
Club monthly meeting, February 5th, 2001.
Recording secretary David Johnson VA3MRJ
President Bob called the meeting to order at 7:32pm, about
40 members and guests were in attendance.
Ben VA3BNY made an announcement about tonight's meeting and introduced
Bill Graham, VE3TK, who gave a story on a microphone on display from CKCR.
Bill said Eric VE3BB used to work for CKCR as well and he presented Eric
with the CKCR microphone badge as a remembrance. Eric said that Hubert
VA3BIQ also for CKCR. Bill made a thoughtful comment that almost all
innovations in radio had a ham involved.
The second speaker for the night was Gord VE3NQK who had a project 2 meter
transceiver on display from the early days of KWARC. Ron Gimbel designed
it to fit into a standard Hammond chassis. Gord reviewed the awards
available under DXCC.
The third presenter was Gord VE3EOS who showed a device he designed and
built that splits SSB to upper and lower sidebands so he he can listen to
each sideband on each side of a headphone. He called it a " Dual
product detector". (this was over my head so if you want more info
contact Gord)
Ben displayed one of the strobe lights from the defunct CKCO-TX tower. It
worked and was very bright.
The next presenter was Bruce VE3NBX, who has another hobby of re-storing
antique outboard motors. He had on display a 1930 2.5hp Evenrude Foldright.
Nice job.
The final presenter was Bob VE3XM, who displayed two PSK boxes to hook up
your computer soundcard to your radio. There was also a 20 meter PSK
transceiver that costs $ 100.00 us.
Roger VE3RKS gave a Canwarn training report, five members attended.
Dave VA3DGS gave the treasurer report that all is well with about $ 1,500
in the bank.
Larry gave a packet group announcement of the next meeting February 20 at
Drew and Mary's. Reminded us that Mary still collects Zehr's tapes.
Ben gave a brief tech report.
Linda VA3LWH won the 50/50 draw.
A swap night was ongoing during the night as well.
