CANWARN Training Session
by Ron VA3TVS

I would like to take this opportunity to invite all Net Controllers, CANWARN spotters, amateur radio operators, emergency service personnel and all members of the public interested in learning and understanding the basics of severe weather spotting and reporting. This community training event is organized by the KWARC on behalf of all our citizens and is supported by, CKCO TV and CKCO meteorologist Dave MacDonald will be held at the University of Waterloo, room 1304 in the Davis Building, parking is off Phillip street, just north of University Avenue.

Randy Mawson of Environment Canada has confirmed he will be presenting the program. All Waterloo Regional Emergency Services personnel will be invited to attend. CKCO meteorologist Dave MacDonald and a support crew from the TV station will be on hand to cover the event.

I hope you can appreciate the complexities involved in regard to the various thermal dynamics and convective genesis that we face this season. All of Southern Ontario has been controlled for several years by a phenomenon known as La~Nina. This has led to a false sense of security for our region, as we all have become complacent with regard to the weather systems. In past years, the moisture from the Gulf of Mexico has been channelled away from us. This year, the strong southerly winds that transport this warm, moist air will funnel over our region, which will provide the fuel needed for thunderstorm development and as such we need to prepare for the summer.

Our CANWARN Spotter program is a great refresher for those who have taken it in the past , and more importantly, necessary for the immediate reporting of severe weather as we encounter it ? both for the public warning safety issues and for climatological records. I look forward to seeing all those interested in assisting Environment Canada with this very important program.

Once again, please make every effort to attend on Monday May 28th. Thank you for your continued community support.

Sincerely,

Ron Gravelle VA3TVS
