June 2001 Packet
Racket

by Larry Gorman VE3LGN

The packet group held its last meeting before the summer break on May 15. We used the meeting to review our activities of the past year, to discuss possible financial commitments and our plans for the future.

Our last project, the KWARC Weather Station, accessible via APRS as well as www.kwarc.org , initiated by, and primarily financed by, the Packet Group has been a great success. Thanks go to Dave VA3DGS who maintains this system

With the revitalization of KWARC Emergency Services this year - ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) and CANWARN (Canadian Weather Amateur Radio Net) the group gave some thoughts as to how we might participate. Our response was to build a packet radio system that would be available should the need arise. Most of the equipment was subsequently donated, and we would like to thank Brian VE3ULQ and The Record newspaper, for the TNC package and a not quite new Macintosh computer. This equipment is currently on standby.

As with the club, the group also faces the problem of an aging membership, and look to next season for some fresh younger faces to revitalize our group, both in enthusiasm and for new ideas.

This will be the last Packet Racket article until September.

Make a point of visiting Doon Heritage Crossroads on June 23 to see KWARC Field day operators in action.

Remember to disconnect those antennas when you go away on holiday, - and have a safe, interesting summer.
