Minutes for May 7th /2001, general meeting of the Kitchener Waterloo
Amateur radio Club.
Bob McKie VA3MCK called the meeting to order at 7:33 pm, He addressed
some 50 members and guests this night. After the customary introductions
of all members and guests, the program started off with Bob VA3MCK
introducing Bill Graham, VE3ETK who handed out a QSL Survey to everyone.
Ben Sasiela VA3BNY, is scheduling a tour of the New Baden Tower and
facilities, of which 40 members in attendance signed up for the tour to be
held on a Wednesday or Thursday in June. Once finalized, Ben will let
everyone know the date.
Ron Gravelle VA3TVS, CANWARN Co-ordinator mentioned the upcoming
spotter training session on Monday May 28 at the University of Waterloo,
room 1304 in the Davis Building. Please park in the north entrance of Lot
"B", located on Phillip street. Coffee, tea and donuts will be
provided for refreshments. Also, if possible, please bring one
non-perishable food item to support our local food bank. Thank you for
your support on this very important issue.
Hugh Baird VE3IYG, talked up a storm about the 27th Annual Central
Ontario Hamfest Flee Market, coming up Saturday June 9, 2001 at the FERGUS
& District Community Centre. The Vendors will be admitted at 6:00am,
while the public goes in from 8:00am to 12:30pm, the snack bar and rest
rooms will be open at 6:30am. Last year's big $300 1st Prize winner was
Lorne Burkhart VE3LCV, from Waterloo.
Paul Cassel VE3SY, KWARC Web Master did another live IRLP (Internet
Radio Linking Project) demo. He contacted CLEM (J73CI) who was mobile on
the island of Dominique. Very impressive indeed.
Gord Hayward VE3EOS, Advanced Co-ordinator announced that all 10
students passed the current advanced class. Way too go!
Ben Sasiela VE3BNY, KWARC Tech Chairman has moved the NASA downlink to
147.150 simplex for everyone to enjoy. Thanks Ben.
Fred Louwe VE3OQB, Field Day Co-ordinator said that Field Day will be held
on June 23 & 24, at Doon Heritage Cross Roads, Pioneer Village. Same
place as last year. Your's truly has offered to help Ben at the coffee
machine. Make mine a double!
Dave Schwartz VA3DGS, Treasurer, announced Club dues are going strong and
we even picked up a few recent new memberships.
Larry Gorman VE3LGN, Packet Group Director will have a packet meeting May
15.
*Bob VA3MCK, had a special announcement for us. He was notified by Paul
VE3EWN, that Mr. Ray Jenning VE3CZE, had emergency surgery on May 6th to
repair a ruptured aneurysm. He had been diagnosed earlier in the previous
week. The surgeons acked quickly and Ray is in stable condition as of May
7th. He cannot have any visitors or flowers at this time. Paul VE3EWN will
keep us informed as to his progress. Please think of him and say a prayer
for Ray. Thank you Paul, and all of us at KWARC wish him a quick and
speedy recovery.

President Bob McKie called the meeting to order at 7:30pm.
Robert VE3ZLV gave the A.R.E.S. report. Ron VA3TVS announced that on May
15th at the U of W Lecture hall there would be a Canwarn presentation.
Dave Macdonald from CKCO will provide coverage. The parking is excellent
with wheel chair access etc. Ed. VE3TCK stated the Canwarn is up and
running and he will contact the EMO.
Larry VE3LGN said there isn't much happening in packet land and gave no
report.
EQSL and RAC were discussed. Paul said the QSL bureau is running well.
Bill Graham will do a survey at the May meeting to find out who has
Internet access to EQSL and those that don't may get help from the ones
that do so that they can us the EQSL service..
Paul VE3SY went into a discussion about the new IRLP system. He said it is
going well and suggested some do's and don'ts when using it which are
listed on the KWARC IRLP web page.
Bob VA3MCK reported the Fred Louwe VE3OQB has field day well in hand. It
will be held at Doon Heritage Crossroads again this year. Ben said we
would get use of the large tent this year, in case of bad weather.
Ben VA3BNY gave a report on the NASA rebroadcast. The legality was
discussed and since it is public domain it is permissible to do so and
Industry Canada permission was obtained before commencing back in 1989.
Dave Johnson named the presidents award which will be presented at the
June meeting.
The executive committee also made a decision on the Amateur of The Year
also for presentation at the June meeting.
Hugh
VE3IYG gave the Flea Market report. He needs volunteers to help set
up/take down tables.
The executive nomination slate for next year was discussed. Ben will
remain as Technical director, Bob will move to Past President, Dennis will
move to President, Larry will remain as Packet director, Dave will remain
as Treasurer. Dave VE3MRJ will move over to the secretary spot. That
leaves an opening for VP. Dennis is to look for a volunteer for the
position.
Dave VA3DGS gave the financial report. We started the year with $1,600
dollars in the kitty and now have $1,750 in there, so were okay money
wise.
Ben reached in his pocket and pulled out 175 dollars for the kitty. He
liquidated some of the clubs surplus assets.
John VE3DOS also donated some surplus equipment to the club he acquired.
Ben reported the KSR repeater is to be replaced. He recommended we buy a
new controller later in the fall.
Ben will report the cost at a later time. The RCK repeater along with its
phone patch will be moved to the Manheim site. The new Nasa link will be
located at the Queen St. site. The frequency is 147.510 and the call sign
has been designated to be VE3IC. Ben is asking for the donation of a
digital answering machine, if you have one please contact him.
Paul Cassel presented the board with a new members package. It will be
given to all new members. The 8 page package contains a greeting from the
club president, a map where the monthly membership meetings are located,
autotpatch instructions, a list of our repeaters, some repeater etiquette
, the ULR network codes, the ILRP node list c/w codes It was suggested the
vice president take on this job.
Ron VA3TVS showed us a sample of a banner to be made to be used at Canwarn
training etc. A motion was passed to acquire it since it is a donation
from the Canwarn organization.
The meeting was adjourned at 9.10 pm.
