Summer is almost gone, and were happy to report that their has been no
damage to our clubs repeater equipment due to lightning or storms.
Everything worked just great with the exception of a few glitches.
VE3RBM ISSUES
Our Clubs IRLP repeater VE3RBM occasionally developed a desense
problem resulting in some static and noise being heard. It was only
after several visits to the
repeater site, that the tech committee was able to locate the source.
The input connection to the UHF preamp was at fault, with a broken
ground connection inside the preamp housing, and compounded with a
faulty connector from the UHF cavities feeding the preamp. Repairs had
been made, and the rf cable and connectors feeding the preamp were
replaced.
We have also found that the commercial repeater controller operating
VE3RBM occasionally, drops the PTT circuit to the exciter for reasons
unknown resulting in a lost transmission. This has been a ongoing
problem for some time, and we will be recommending to the club, to
replace this controller in the very near future. Being that this
repeater is our prime for the IRLP, we would want some degree of
reliability.
NASA SHUTTLE BROADCAST
If anyone has been following the NASA shuttle on 147.510, our
clubs webmaster has included a link on our web's home page to ISS
sighting times and dates when the shuttle is flying. On a few occasions,
I was able to listen to the NASA communications while watching the
shuttle pass overhead. It looked like a small rapid traveling star
visible for only a few minutes.
The Technical committee met during the summer months to review and
discuss plans for improvements, and the minutes of this meeting are
available in the newsletter.
PHONE PATCHES
As you have read elsewhere in our newsletter, beginning in September,
the clubs two repeaters with phone patch options will be changed to a
open patch. Members will no longer require a patch access code when
placing patch calls. This option is now part of your valuable membership
package. Our VE3RCK repeater, which has the greatest exchange calling
list, is also capable of being programmed with a personal number of your
choice that would dial from the three number speed dial option. As a
paid KWARC member, you are entitled to have assigned your very own speed
dial number on RCK repeater. There is a limited number of speed dial
slots available, and these will be assigned on a first come, first serve
basis to members only. Once depleted, you will be placed on a waiting
list. Contact myself, to have a speed dial number assigned and for a
patch procedure info sheet.
See you at the beginning of another great year of meetings.
