With the heightened concern for reliable communications links, there has been much discussion lately in amateur radio publications and in the ARES Coordinator networks on the internet., regarding the delivery of Amateur Radio Emergency Services Coincidentally, ARESONTARIO had scheduled its annual SET (Simulate Emergency Exercises) for Nov 4-5 even before the September 11 disaster. Part of this exercise was to network the various ARES groups throughout Ontario. As my travel plans put me in Australia at this time I had arranged for Norm VE3DEQ to handle our connection. But the atmospheric conditions were such on the HF bands that about all Norm could detect was "frying bacon". So much for the best laid plans of mice and men. The Region has been working on plans to revitalize its emergency measures procedures, and we will re-establish closer ties with them in the near future. A recent E-mail has elucidated to me that what may be obvious to some is not obvious to others. Should KWARC ARES need to be activated we would initially work from VE3RCK, or VE3KSR. Should a network need to be established, in all likelihood, we would branch out onto a suitable simplex channel as well. At this point a message would be loaded into the repeater periodically reminding listeners where to tune in.
