The New Industry Canada

Club members who where in attendance at last months meeting may have been surprized at the reduced role Industry Canada would play should they have interference or be causing any interference to a neighbour. Mr. Rick Hergott, the Spectrum Manager for South Western Ontario spoke to the meeting on his departments mandate and how his office and employees would address the above issues.

Under the departments current mandate, Radio Amateurs are now expected to resolve interference issues themselves. Industry Canada will provide instructional video tapes to the general public that advises on how to recognize various types of interference from electrical motors, co-channel TV and ghosting, to RFI from Ham or CB transmitters. Members in attendance may remember George who was shown on the prowl for a neighbouring CB antenna that may have identified the source of interference to his Television signal. The video was quite well produced and also humorous.

As for interference we may experience from commercial radio transmitters or electrical power lines, we are now expected to resolve the issues ourselves by contacting the offending party and working with them to resolve the interference issue. Should none of the above work, and Industry Canada is requested to attend, an $80 fee is levied to cover some of the costs incurred.

Three Spectrum Charts were donated by Rick to the club which were auctioned off to the three top bidders which improved our bank balance by $30.00.

Thank You Rick.
