Field Day - June 27-28, 1998
by Dave Schwartz VA3DGS, Field Day Coordinator

June is upon us an we all know what that means, right? No, not just the Flea Market - Field Day! Never heard of it? Here's what you've been missing.

Field Day is essentially an emergency preparedness demonstration where groups of hams all over North America set up stations independent of the normal infrastructure and make contacts among themselves. While points are scored for contacts as in a contest, the whole idea is to have fun and show off the capabilities of ham radio. Remember Ice Storm '98? That was a perfect example of why we do it - when all else fails, the hams get through!

KWARC has participated in this event for many years and there's a trophy for the high scoring station. This year, as an effort to make the event more accessible to the public, we're holding the activities in the parking lot of NCR at Weber and Northfield. Set-up begins at 10:00AM Saturday, operation starts at 2:00PM and continues until 2:00PM Sunday. Things are shaping up to have a possible 6 stations on the air and CW will have a strong presence.

So come on out and see what its about! Even better, get involved! You don't have to set up your own station - just ask one of the operators and I'm sure they will be glad for a fresh set of vocal cords or that golden fist.

SEE YOU THERE!
