MONDAY'S MEETING
Garry V. Hammond VE3XN
Garry says he has been interested in the radio hobby ever since he was fifteen years of age and his Dad, Vernon described listening to short-wave radio stations back in the 1930's. Garry goes on to say
. "Dad made it sound interesting, and for eight years, short-wave listening and amateur radio monitoring as VE3-7554 were important to me. However, I did want to talk too, and so in 1965 I earned my amateur radio operator's license and became VE3GCO. In 1984, Communications Canada offered "older" hams two letter suffix calls and I was to receive VE3XN. The former holder of the call was Mr. Hobbs Langford, a radio pioneer in Canada, a radio inspector for the government, and a manufacturer of the XN receiver. (Thanks to my friend David Noon, VA3DN, formerly VE3LAE, I now have a completely restored model of the YN-4. Needless to say it has a place of honour in my home.
I love collecting QSL cards and have more than 100,000 filed alphanumerically. DXCC has been worked on nine bands from 10M to 160M including the three WARC bands of 12, 17, and 30 metres. Currently all but P5 have been worked and confirmed on SSB. I still need A51, VU4, P5, es BS7 to have them on CW, too!
In December, 1993 I became the first station in North America to earn the IOTA 750 islands Shield of Excellence. In 1995 I was appointed checkpoint for IOTA for VE, XE, and Caribbean countries. Naturally, I continue to took for islands, worldwide."
I look forward to sharing some of my experiences with you Monday evening through the lens of my camera.
Start Time ... 7.30 p.m
