MONDAY'S MEETING
Garry Kornstien VE3JGK
Many of us hear Garry VE3JGK heading off early each morning to various smaller hospitals around the province to perform Ultra Sound scanning.
Gary has been licenced since 1973 and operated some HF CW and 2m FM for about 4 years then inactive for several years
while at school. He got back into VHF around the early 80's due to lots of mobile time for work
He has been doing medical ultrasound since 1981, mobile since '83 and has done many kinds of tests, including pregnancy , abdominal , thyoid etc . and in the last 5 years has specialized in cardio-vascular work.
Gary is registered with the ARDMS ( American Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers ) in 3 specialties and working on a fourth .
Many of us may have had Ultra Sound examinations and may not have understood the technology so be sure to attend this Mondays meeting to get the full scoop.
For those unable to attend here is a very brief overview:
Since its introduction in the late 1950's ultrasonography has become a very useful diagnostic tool. Currently used equipments are known as real-time scanners, with which a continuous picture of the internal body can be depicted on a monitor screen. Very high frequency sound waves of between 3.5 to 7.0 megahertz are generally used for this purpose. They are emitted from a transducer which is placed in contact with the maternal abdomen, and is moved to "look at" (likened to a light shined from a flashlight) any particular internal portion of the body.
Repetitive arrays of ultrasound beams scan the targeted portion of the body in thin slices and are reflected back onto the same transducer. The information obtained from different reflections are recomposed back into a picture on the monitor screen. Movements such as a fetal heart beat can be assessed and measurements can be made to very accurate levels on the images displayed on the screen.
Gary operates his own business performing Ultrasound examinations for hospitals and clinics around the province who prefer to contract this procedure to a third party.
