Some 35 club members braved the winter weather to come out to the Mondays night KWARC meeting and join the demo on Packet, cheap and simple. Club Sysop, Tedd Doda, VE3TJD and Ben Sasiela VA3BNY teamed up and presented a video and live demo on packet protocol, TNC's and BBS procedures. Several types of software used for packet was demonstrated, along with several TNC's types, and radio's used for linking. Members eager to learn more about packet were able to view on the projection TV the actual login screens, usage of BBS commands, and types of shareware software available, from manual to fully automatic programs such as TPK, which uses the inexpensive Baycom TNC . Tedd handed out to members a sheet of descriptions on packet procedures as well as explaining how our club's prime BBS functions. This was followed by questions and discussions, ending with members being able to view the simple equipment that was used. Tedd is in the process of gathering equipment that will be used to loan out to any member that would like to try and further explore packet. This should be ready by the next meeting, and will consist of a laptop, TNC, software, instructions and radio, for packet ready login.. Anyone that wishes to try out packet using this loan equipment can contact Tedd Doda, VE3TJD or VA3BNY. Tech Chairman John Riddell, VE3AMZ brought along a terminal that will also be utilized for packet, our thanks to John for the contribution. Both Tedd and I wish to thank the members that attended the meeting despite the stormy weather, Hope everyone had a interesting night.
