PL on KSR ??

To PL or Not to PL …. That is the Question… by Ben VA3BNY

The executive committee received a motion from a club member that is being considered at this time regarding our clubs repeater VE3KSR.

The motion requests that the repeater be changed so a user would require a PL tone of 131.8 from their radio for access.

Radio’s that are not capable of producing PL tones, or users that did not transmit a PL tone of 131.8 to VE3KSR would be unable to access the repeater if this motion is adopted.

In recent months, there has been some unwanted signals penetrating and interfering with KSR. We suspect that theses are non hams operating simplex on our input frequency. I.C. has been notified. The use of PL tones to access KSR is one method of eliminating unwanted interference. Also, occasionally during inversions, we hear other repeaters on the same input frequency, as well.

I have been asked to chair a committee to study the feasibility of this proposal, and make recommendations to the executive committee weather we should option to have the requirement of PL tones to access KSR.

I am asking for input from the members to express there opinions, provide input information, or arguments either for or against this motion.

This change would affect some of our own members as well as amateurs passing through our area. PL would be required to access the auto patch as well, if installed.

Please take a moment to consider this change, and submit your comments in writing to me at va3bny@rac.ca  or give me your written comments at the next monthly meeting in Feb. A final recommendation will be tabulated for the next executive meeting.

Please keep it simple (kiss)..
