KWARC and CANWARN
by John Schreieter VE3DOS

John Schreiter attended a Canwarn steering committee meeting on Saturday February 27, 1999, here are some of the highlights of the meeting.

  • The new Grid Atlas should be available at the training sessions. You will be required to fill out a form to check that you have received training at the session, or in the past. You are encouraged to attend the training session if it has been a few years. The training has been updated every year.
  • The Grid Atlas will also be available from John Schreiter VE3DOS for those who can not attend.
  • Net Controllers will be given a three hour heads up when possible of approaching severe weather by pager.
  • A training date for K-W will be announced in the near future. Two dates in March, and one in April have been submitted to Randy. He will advise which date suits his schedule the best.
  • The K-W Canwarn station computer is off being upgraded with more memory, a CD drive, a 33.3 modem, and Windows 95. Next year we should be getting a Pentium with more bells a whistles to meet Y2K compliance for the federal government.
  • FYI - I have heard a lot of chatter about a 6 meter repeater planned for the area, and numerous area hams planning to get equipment that do not presently have it. Canwarn is planning 6 meters as a backup to 2 meters especially in the areas around Toronto. They depend heavily on the ULR system during Canwarn sessions. They feel 6 meters will do the job, and have submitted the proposal for next years Canwarn budget.

Environment Canada will be conducting spotter training session across Ontario and Amateurs are invited. New CanWarn spotters, and retraining for those of you already trained is very important.

St. Andrews Presbyterian Church - Library
Corner of Queen St. North and Weber St.

K-W Canwarn requires some volunteers willing to be Net Controllers. You will carry a pager, and depending on the number of controllers available, and a schedule set by week, must be available to go to the Fire Hall in Waterloo on Weber St. by University to run the net. John will be available for your first couple of sessions until you get comfortable. It is a good learning experience in message handling and net control.John handled all page outs last year but one, and need s some assistance to have a life. If your job or life style permits this type of activity contact Ed Spike VE3ETK.
