Beacons The first beacon was designed in 1979 by Jim Ouimet K6OJO. It is based on the suggestions by O.G. Mike Villard, Jr. W6QYT. This beacon operates on 14.100, 18.110, 21.150, 24.930, 28.200 MHz. It will transmit every 3 minutes. The callsign of the beacon is sent in Morse code at 22 words per minute. It is followed by four dashes. The callsign and first dash are sent at 100 watts with the remaining dashes sent at 10 watts, 1 watt, and 0.1 watt. The beacon consists of a Kenwood TS-50S transceiver, a modified Cushcraft R-5 vertical antenna, a Trimble Navigation Accutime GPS receiver and a custom controller built by NCDXF volunteers. This will allow the listener to monitor all 18 beacons in three minutes.
