George Walker VE3IXZ George Elliot Walker VE3IXZ, resident of Foxboro Green, Baden, made his transition into the greater circle of life, on Monday, March 20 at Alexandra Marine General Hospital, Goderich. In his 84th year, George was the loving husband and spiritual soul mate of Ellen, loving father and grandfather to son David, his wife Linda, and granddaughters Leslie and Laura of Goderich and to his son Bill, his wife Barb, and granddaughters Kesia and Erin of Thunder Bay. Predeceased by his first wife Marion Rathlou. While a resident of Guelph, George was the owner of George Walker Jewellers on the square. He was a member of the Guelph Rotary Club, Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge of Quebec Street, an active member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Ham Radio Club (VE3IXZ) during the 80s, and an active flyer at the Guelph Airport. In 1980 George was a founding member of the KWARC TRS-80 Computer club and had a life long interest in computers and amateur radio. Currently living in Foxboro Green, George was involved as a volunteer in the community; served as a Board member and actively advocated volunteerism within the community. He was instrumental in the creation of the Computer Club, the web site and the Service and Equipment Committee. He delighted in the acceptance and use of the golf cart and held the vision of the anticipated storage shed. Self described as a whimsical free spirited philosophical thinker, George was always looking towards understanding how life worked - the integration of science and spiritual beingness and the development of his own personal philosophy of life. His creative and logical mind was constantly working on problem solving and the improvement of "whatever". In respect of George's wishes, cremation has taken place and the family is holding a private gathering time. A special note of thanks to Dr Don Neal and the staff of AMGH for their committed compassionate care and consideration of George and the family. Remembrances of George would be appreciated by the family as a random act of kindness towards someone or a donation to the charity of your choice. George will be lovingly remembered and missed by his family and many friends. We know that he touched many lives and are grateful for sharing this chapter of his life. Norman joined the Royal Navy in 1930 as a signal boy where he received training in semaphore and Morse code. After two and a half years he attained signalman status and was drafted to the Castille Signal station in Valetta, Malta for three years.
After being invalided out of the Navy for, of all things, chronic seasickness, he was offered a job as a temporary clerk keeping records of radar equipment. This was very confidential in those days and having been a signalman and knowing the Secrets Act made him an ideal candidate for the position.
Norman joined the Royal Air Force when the Second World War broke out but opted for an accelerated aircraft mechanic and engine fitters apprenticeship. He had already discovered that the knowledge of signals would not eventually fit him for a job in the civilian world.
In 1951 Norman immigrated to Canada with his wife and daughter and worked at A.V. Roe as an aircraft inspector and then as a quality control inspector. After the AVROE Arrow contract was cancelled he worked at several different positions eventually ending up as Quality Control Manager for four Standard Products (now Cooper-Standard Automotive) in and around Stratford, Ontario.
While in Stratford Norman became interested in the Ham Radio. Morse code, of course, came easily to him but learning the intricacies of the radio equipment took a lot more study. Finally he received his radio license and in January, 1977 received his certificate of membership from the Ex "G" Radio Club. Norm was the Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian section of the Ex G club until his move to Guelph on his retirement.
Norman enjoyed his morning communications with club members right up until 1998
when he finally decided that it was time to move into a senior's residence.
During the years he was "on the air" he made several friends whom he visited
when on his travels across Canada or to the UK. He continued to keep in touch
with them by letter or phone until he passed away on July 9, 2003, in Guelph,
Ontario.

Additional Information from Ted
Bodman VE3CD
Fred was originally licensed as VE3BUC (now held by your humble webmasters Cousin) pre WW2 and traded that in for VE3DZ in the 60s.
Fred worked for Radio Trade Supply just up the Street when in 1956 another ham who had been working down the street at Canadian Electrical Supply (now Electro-Sonic) came to Waterloo to set up Waterloo Electronics Supply. About that time or shortly after Fred was working with Raytheon when he was transferred to a Caribbean island to manage a plant. Several years later this plant was closed and he came back to Waterloo and took a job working with General Instruments.
Ted recalls...., "Fred came across the street quite often to Waterloo Electronics. He asked a number of times if I had job for him and I always thought he was kidding until one day we could use some extra help and I said are u serious? He said yes started with us which I think was in late 60s or early 70s"
Many of you will remember Fred's friendly demeanour while he worked at Waterloo Electronics.

AMATEUR
RADIO LEGEND
LEW "MAC" MCCOY, W1ICP
July 31, 2000
Amateur
Radio legend and former ARRL Headquarters staff member Lew "Mac"
McCoy, W1ICP, of Mesa, Arizona, died July 31. He was 84. His daughter,
Marsha Ashurst, W1HAQ, said McCoy had not been feeling well for about
seven weeks and was diagnosed as being seriously ill only three weeks
before he died.
As a member of the ARRL Headquarters staff from 1949 until 1978, McCoy
gained a national and international reputation primarily for his articles
in QST and his early work to combat TV interference.
An ARRL Life Member, McCoy was first licensed as W9FHZ. He arrived at ARRL
Headquarters in 1949, eventually landing in the Technical Department.
There, he was able to take advantage of his ability to explain technical
concepts in simple terms.
McCoy earned a reputation as a tireless traveler and goodwill ambassador
for Amateur Radio. He first started hitting the road in the early 1950s
after TVI had become troublesome for amateurs and soon became the League's
TVI expert.
After leaving the ARRL Headquarters staff, McCoy continued as a QST
contributing editor. He subsequently was a major contributor to other
Amateur Radio publications, including CQ.
During his active years on the air, McCoy was an avid DXer. More recently,
he was active in the Quarter Century Wireless Association, had served as
QCWA president and a board member and had just been elected again to the
QCWA's Board of Directors, something his daughters never got to tell him
before he died. QCWA President Emeritus Leland Smith, W5KL, remembers
McCoy as a proponent of a no-code license for beginners who also advocated
the 5 WPM maximum code requirement subsequently adopted by the FCC.
McCoy's first wife (of 60 years), Martha, died in 1998. Survivors include
his wife, Clara Gibbs McCoy, and his daughters, Marsha Ashurst,
W1HAQ--licensed at age 8 and said at the time to be the youngest ham in
the world--and Sharon Armann, ex-WN1GQR, as well as grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
In accordance with McCoy's wishes, there will be no funeral. The family is
planning a memorial service for McCoy in early December. In lieu of
flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations in Lew McCoy's name
to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E Flower St, Phoenix, AZ 85014-5656.
Condolences may be sent to the family care of Marsha Ashurst, PO Box 2260,
Lakeside, AZ 85929.
